Drupal Wave Reaches Eastern Shores
(Nov. 24, 2015) - Remember before the Internet how fads and trends used to start on the West Coast and travel like a wave from west to east. Before you knew it everyone on the East Coast was using a Hula Hoop, a Walkman, and Roller Blades.
Well, fads continue to make their way across the country, the most recent being a big one -- Drupal.
Drupal like DNN and WordPress is an open source website platform and content management system. Anyone can download Drupal and use any of the thousands of modules (plugins) created by developers for adding content and functionality.
Open-source means it's continually being reviewed and improved to suit the current and evolving needs of its users. DNN (formerly known as DotNetNuke) is also open source but within the Microsoft ecosystem. As is WordPress. Sometimes the word "free" is used in association with open source, but open source still requires an investment in developers, managers and content providers so calling it "free" is a misnomer.
Where does the name Drupal come from? Well, it comes from a misspelling of the Dutch word for "village" which is "dorp." And while the roots of the name are Dutch, Drupal was founded in Belgium as a message board.
The first website Guaranteed Press was involved in building, writing and managing was a Drupal website. It was in 2009 and the originating IT firm was from the West Coast. Drupal was "hot" on the West Coast. Now, Drupal has moved to the East Coast, perhaps most notably to the State of New York (NY.gov) which celebrated its one year anniversary with Drupal this month. So this isn't the last time you'll be hearing of it. click here
However, whether it's Drupal, WordPress, DNN or Joomla, the value of a website lives mainly in -- you know what -- content!
